Volkswagen is looking to dislodge Honda’s dominance in the premium mid-size segment in India, with the launch of a new executive sedan in the second half of this year.
To be known as Vento, it is targeted primarily at the Honda City, which has been the segment’s best-seller since its launch in September 2008, clocking average sales of around 4,000 units monthly.
The new sedan is built on the same platform as the Polo, a premium hatchback launched by VW in February.

German premium carmaker BMW on Friday launched sixth generation of its popular 5 Series sedan in the country. The luxury sedan, which is available in two petrol and two diesel variants, is offered in the price band of between Rs 38.9 lakh and Rs 58 lakh.
Speaking on the occasion, Mr. Peter Kronschnabl, President, BMW India said: “The 5 Series is the core model in our product portfolio. Each generation of the BMW 5 Series has been a winner and has played a major role in the company’s success around the world. And we intend to keep it that way in India.”
Japanese auto giant Toyota said it has suspended bookings for its sports utility vehicle Fortuner till July in India in order to clear backlog of bookings.
“The average waiting period for the SUV Fortuner is around six months and we have closed bookings as we do not want our customers to wait. We will re-start bookings in June -July once we are able to clear the backlog,” Toyota Kirloskar Motor (TKM) Deputy Managing Director Sandeep Singh said.
Porsche has initiated a recall for all 11,324 Panamera copies sold worldwide, until April. The reason for the Panamera recall is seat belts that can accidentally detach in certain conditions. Porsche said all 11,324 Panameras would be brought to the mechanic to fix possible faulty seat belt tensioners.
According to Porsche’s press release, the Panamera’s front seat belts could fail, and detach from their anchoring system if seats are placed in the nearest position to the board.

Tatas-owned luxury carmaker Jaguar Land Rover is reviewing earlier plans to close one of its UK plants on account of a recent revival in sales and and is also likely to seek the UK government’s assistance for launching new models, says a media report.
UK-based The Sunday Times has reported that Jaguar Land Rover (JLR) is “weighing a dramatic about-face on plans to close one of its three UK production plants”.
