Nissan Motor unveiled its new Micra small car at the Geneva Motor Show, the first hatchback to be produced and sold in India by the company.
Sales of the new Micra, which will be called ‘March’ in Japan, will start in Thailand in March, in India in July and European sales will begin in November this year. Production will commence in Chennai from May this year.
Speaking to reporters during the launch in Geneva, CEO Carlos Ghosn said the Micra is a car destined to be a serious competitor on the world stage.
Japanese carmaker Nissan today said it is in talks with Hinduja flagship company Ashok Leyland for developing a small car for the global market that could be priced around $4,500-5,000.
The company, which is also a partner in the development of an ultra low cost car with Bajaj Auto and Renault, said the project is yet to find a solution to produce such a cheap car.
“We are studying the possibility of tying up with Ashok Leyland and some other manufacturers in China and Indonesia for a small car project,” Carlos Ghosn was quoted as saying to Indian reporters at the Geneva Auto Show.
Tata Motors on Tuesday said it will launch the electric version of the world’s cheapest car Nano in Europe within the next two-and-a-half years, although no time-line has been fixed for its roll-out at home.
“The electric Nano will be launched in Europe in two-and-a-half years and it will be launched in select markets like Britain and the Scandinavian countries first, and gradually in other nations,” Tata Motors vice-chairman Ravi Kant told reporters at the Geneva Motor Show here today.
Carmaker Fiat India reported 78.38 per cent jump in its total sales at 2,335 units in February this year. The company had sold 1,309 units in the corresponding period last year, Fiat India Automobiles said in a statement.
For the April-February period, the company’s sales soared by over three-fold to 23,551 units from 6,897 units in the same period last fiscal, it added.

India’s leading carmaker Maruti Suzuki is recalling 100,000 cars in India and overseas due to potential fuel leakage problems. The company says the recall of A-Star began in November, but did not disclose the move until late February.
“In November 2009, we came across an anomaly reported in the fuel tank in some of the vehicles and by December 2009, we started contacting the customers through letters,” the company said in a statement.
